In 1935, Herbert "Whitey" White put together a group of hot swing dancers from the clubs of New York. The group traveled around the world and appeared in two prominent Hollywood movies, Hellzapoppin' and The Marx Brothers A Day at the Races. This made the lindy hop a world wide phenomenon and everyone wanted to do it.
Frankie Manning
Franking Manning was a dancer with White’s Lindy Hoppers in the 1930’s. He was discovered by Herbert “Whitey” White in 1935 at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem.
Young people would gather for a weekly dance contest to try to outdance each other.
Frankie was the originator of the trademark move of swing, the aerial. This is the tossing about of partners and the incorporation of gymnastics to the dance.
Another of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers was Norma Miller.
Norma and Frankie bother appeared in the movie Hellzapoppin’ in 1941.
Frankie danced until he died in 2009 at the age of 94. On his 100th birthday anniversary there was a huge lindy hop celebration in New York City.
